This course, which is essentially the first half of MA 55300, is recommended for students wanting a more substantial background in algebra than is afforded by MA 45300, in particular students intending to do graduate work in science or engineering. Topics include the elements of number theory and group theory; unique factorization in polynomial rings and in principal ideal domains.
