Students will study how children's oral language develops, how children learn to read and write in early childhood/K3 settings, and the teacher's role in this process. Students will learn how phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension influence children's literacy development. Students will learn how to select appropriate instructional materials; employ teaching strategies to meet the cognitive and affective literacy needs of all children; and collect, interpret, and use data from various types of assessments to inform literacy teaching and learning processes.

Prerequisites:
(EDCI 20500 and EDCI 28500) and (EDPS 23500 [may be taken concurrently] and EDPS 26500 [may be taken concurrently]) or (HDFS 31000 [may be taken concurrently])
